No one doubts that wood is a warm material that harmoniously dresses our homes at this point in time. But it has many other advantages: it is an all-terrain material, it is equally suitable for bedrooms, living rooms or kitchens. In addition, it requires very little maintenance and wooden furniture, with some basic care, can last for years and years and still look as good as new.
For some time now, moreover, the sustainability certifications that some woods have, provide the element that was missing, as they certify to the end buyer that this raw material comes from properly managed forests.
To commemorate World Forest and Timber Day, celebrated on 21 March, we spoke to Hannun, a firm that combines this sustainable character with a touch of craftsmanship with a brand of handmade furniture made from sustainable wood.
Joan Álvarez, CEO of the company, explains to idealista/news that they have «a commitment to finish by not cutting down a single tree or sustainable forest», he assures. In fact, he stresses that they work with 85% of sustainable wood certified and audited with the PEFC and FSC seals and 15% with recycled wood, with the aim of exceeding 50% by 2025. In other words, they have two lines of furniture: those made from certified wood and those made from recycled wood.
This is far from being the case in the rest of the industry: in fact, 79% of the furniture sold is made in Asia. 10.5 million tonnes of furniture are consumed and 10 million tonnes end up in landfill or incinerated when many of them could certainly be given another life…
The woods in Hannun’s designs not only have the above certifications, but are also PETA-certified. In addition, they ship in environmentally friendly packaging made from recycled and recyclable cardboard. They are selling mainly in our country, in Germany, France and Italy. As for their designs made with recycled wood, basically this wood comes from recovered pallets.
Hannun appeals to small artisans (more than 60) who manufacture pieces by hand, a production model far removed from the ‘fast furniture’ of other firms. They have tables, benches, bed headboards, shelves of all kinds, hangers, mirrors… which are only sold online. Among the best sellers is the Yorel dining table.
They also have a section on their website, Reuse Market, in which they give a second life to their products that they have used in showrooms, prototypes or others that may have some damage, and which they sell at discounts ranging from 25% to 50%.
Are these pieces of furniture cheaper than those that are not made from recycled wood? They are «slightly cheaper, but not much more at the same margins, given that it involves obtaining, recovering, filtering, treating and composing the recycled wood to achieve a quality and long-lasting finish in a totally sustainable and artisan way», the company explains.
